Dental Crown

Dental crowns can be used to replace chipped, decayed, broken, misaligned, or discolored teeth, recomended for teeth with large fillings.

An Odontika dentist will match the artificial crown up to the shape colour of your other teeth so it will look natural. The crown will last for many years, depending on the health of the tooth underneath.

A temporary crown made of plastic is put over the tooth until the permanent crown is prepared.

Dental Bridge

Dental Bridges are used to span, or bridge a gap (missing teeth) between healthy teeth or implants. It is used to restore appearance and function. A bridge can be made from either porcelain, metal or both. Same as with crowns, teeth on either side of the empty space are reshaped and reduced in size. The two shaped teeth then act as anchors, or abutments.

The process for obtaining a crown or bridge

The process of fitting crowns and bridges requires two-three visits to the dentist and an approximate 7-10 days stay or visiting twice for 1 or 2 days.

First visit:
X-rays are taken to assess the health of teeth wich require crowns

The tooth receiving the crown is filed down, the bridge supporting teeth are being recontoured by removing a portion of enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them

A shade guide may be used to select the correct colour of porcelain

Impressions are taken

A temporary bridge or crown may be cemented to protect the prepared teeth between visits

Second visit:
The temporary bridge or crown is removed

The permanent crown or bridge is checked for colour and fit

If you and your dentist are happy with your crown or bridge, it is permanently fixed in place with cement

Types of crowns and bridges

Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns and bridges can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth. However, sometimes the metal underlying the crown's porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth.

Glass based ceramics or all-porcelain dental crowns provide the best natural color match than any other type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. However, they are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and bridges, that’s why are recommended for front teeth.

Zirconium based ceramics is a unique system for the fabrication of esthetic and functional dental restorations. A CAD/CAM technology scanning procedure renders a custom manufactured coping, which ensures optimal fit, great strength, non-porosity and has the ability to transmit light. Zirconium base ceramic crowns and bridges can be recommended for prosthetic reconstructions anywhere in the mouth, due to the strength of the core material. It is made of a bio-compatible material, which minimizes the risk of allergic reactions. The translucent coping offers remarkable esthetic characteristics, recreating the beauty of natural teeth.

Significans of dental Hygiene after receiving crowns or bridges

While a crowned tooth does not require any special care, you should continue to follow good oral hygiene practices, including brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day - especially around the crown area where the gum meets the tooth.
Bridges are cemented in place, so they cannot be removed for cleaning. To keep the teeth healthy, the gap under a bridge must be cleaned daily using special interdental brush - an ordinary toothbrush is not enough.

Onlays

In some cases where a tooth has a large defect (but not so large to make a crown), we propose to reconstruct the missing part of the tooth by a porcelain onlay. In this way the tooth shaping and crown fitting is avoided. The colour is selected individually in every case. Onlays ensure long–term and aesthetic restoration. They are very strong and more durable than ordinary large fillings. They are suitable for the grinding surfaces of the molar teeth and can be made out of porcelain or gold.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a very thin outer shell of ceramic placed to the front of the teeth surface. Veneers are a conservative application of cosmetic dentistry where reducing or reshaping the natural tooth's structure is minimal. Veneers can however result in a very positive improvement to a person's smile. Porcelain veneers are placed to mask discolorations, to brighten teeth, and to improve a smile.

Treatment process:
The enamel on the front side of the tooth is removed. The goal is to trim the tooth about the same amount as the thickness of the veneer that will ultimately be bonded into place. This way the net size of the tooth will not be dramatically changed.Impressions are taken.

Temporary Veneers are made.

Porcelain veneers are made in the dental laboratory.

Bonding: Once you and your dentist have determined that the shape and shade of your veneer is appropriate it can be bonded into place.
